Director QJRIU. Prof. dr Zbigniew Leś

Prof. Z. Leś is a graduate from the Technical University of Cracow (M.Sc. and PhD.), Poland and the University of Melbourne (MSc.). He also did postgraduate courses in computer science at Silesian University, and advanced mathematical methods and film art at Jagiellonian University. He is founder and director of the Queen Jadwiga Foundation and Queen Jadwiga Research Institute of Understanding. He is also founder of the QJF Art&Science Gallery that is based on an artistic program comprising three thematic strands: 1. Masterpieces as signs 2. Works of art as a result of systematic investigations and 3. Scientific beauty of the expanded visual field where the source of the aesthetic inspiration might be found not only in the world of our common existence but also, due to the expansion of our scale of perception, in the’ micro-macro’ world. His interest in fine art started in Poland with pioneering explorations of the utilization of scientific visual information (a micro-macro world) in artistic works. His artistic works have been presented at exhibitions in Cracow and Melbourne. Prof. Leś has also conducted research at the University of Melbourne aiming at developing a method of aesthetic evaluation based on an image understanding approach. His research “Image Understanding and Aesthetic Evaluation” was the first attempt in the world to utilize the image understanding approach to aesthetic evaluation. He is also working on the opera ‘Queen Jadwiga’ which will be based on utilization of the new signal processing method in sound producing. Currently he is conducting research on thinking and understanding. One of the aims of this new area of research is development of the Shape Understanding System (SUS), which is the first attempt to build a system with visual thinking capabilities. SUS is now enriched in ability to understand the different objects such as the visual object, the sensory object and the text object. System of minerals understanding ‘Domeyko’ is a part of the system which is now being developed in the context of building of the ‘Strzelecki’ collection of minerals. He is also founder of the QJF Press that is dedicated to publish unique books of high artistic quality. Until now four books were published, co-authored by M. Leś. He is also the editor of the International Journal of Understanding and QJF Bulletin published by QJF Press. As the director of QJF he initiated collaboration with St. Jadwiga Queen Family of Schools that is aimed on elaboration of the new educational program based on strong relation of the learning at school with the traditional values of the Polish culture. Within this program new forms of students’ activities were developed, such as ‘St. Jadwiga Queen little pearl’ or ‘the Queen of the Year meets with children from an orphanage’. He is an author of more than sixty scientific papers and two scientific books. Several times he has been a member of the Program Committee of the international conferences (SIP, CG). He was included in ‘Who is Who in the World’ in the years 2003, 2005 and 2007. He is also a political activist and he intends to candidate to be elected as the President of Poland.
